Everybody thinks the hardest part of line school is the poles.
The climbing is tough as first, sure. But it's not what decides how well you do.
Here are 5 things that help you get the most out of line school.
1. Start getting your body ready now
Your grip and your legs do most of the work up there. You don't need a gym for this. Walk hills with a loaded pack. Squeeze a hand gripper while you watch TV. Show up with a base and week one hurts less.
2. Learn to take correction
You will get corrected in front of the whole class. That is not the instructor coming after you. That is how you learn to do something safely 40 feet off the ground. The guys who adjust fast are the ones who get trusted with more.
3. Don't blow off the book work
Most of your day is hands on. But the theory is what keeps you safe and what gets you through an apprenticeship interview. Read at night. Ask questions if something isn't clicking.
4. Treat it like a job site, not a class
Boots on before start time. Help load gear. Clean up your area. Your instructors spent their careers in this trade and they still talk to people in it. How you carry yourself gets noticed.
5. Know the names of the men next to you
Pole top rescue only works if you trust the other guy. You are going to be cold, tired, and sore with these people. The days go easier when the class pulls together.
None of this requires talent. It requires showing up a certain way.
